In another survey, 42. 3 million of 42. 3 million Americans age 65 and older say that its easy for them to cover their monthly living expenses. It’s clear that old Americans are able to support themselves without depending on anyone. However, even if they cannot take care of themselves, the old American people don’t have to worry because, in sense of health service or nursing houses, the American society and government seriously take good care of their senior citizens. There are more than 16,000 nursing houses for old people all over America, many of these houses has reached the 5-stars standard. The United States is famous for spending more on health care for seniors more than any other developed country on the world (America’s seniors, 2012). Moreover, beside health care, tons of money is also being invested in medical researches (95 billion in 2005). The seniors, of course, gain benefit from that investment. Rate of heart disease – the most common disease among old Americans- has declined by a third since 1980 thanks to many breakthroughs in medical field. The industrialization in the 19th century meant that aged were no longer useful since younger, faster and stronger workers were more desirable in the factory and the society. These negative attitudes continued up to the 20th and 21st centuries. People now can easily look up things in books, dictionary or on the Internet. They are no longer need to ask old people for their knowledge. Moreover, from the 1950s, the American culture was greatly affected by the youth. Many teen heroes such as James Dean were worshipped at that time (â€Å"American Attitudes†, 2010). Slowly, the American culture started to shape as the culture of the youth and old people were left out of the picture. According to a national survey in 2012, 75% of Vietnamese seniors live with their children. Most Vietnamese people take care of their parents until they die rather than sending them in to the nursing house like the Americans. Old people, regardless of wealth, education or social position, receive high respect in the society. This respect is expressed through attitude, behavior or choice of language. It’s quite common to see a rich teenage boy shows his respect to the old street vendor lady by calling himself ‘con’ (lower position) while addressing her ‘di’ or ‘bac’ ( higher postion). The question here is why there is difference between the Vietnamese and Americans culture in the way they treat their seniors. Why in one country, they are respected and highly value but in another country, they are considered as the ‘left out’ part of the society? Perhaps the answer lies within the characteristic of the two cultures. In America, the emphasis are on independence, individualism and self-reliance so old people lose the respect of the society when they inevitable lose these traits. In contrast, since Vietnam culture is collectivism, it emphasizes on group-oriented values and social hierarchy. Therefore, young people are required to respect their parents, grandparents and their seniors. Moreover, most of the Americans have high demand on personal privacy (Judy Lin, â€Å"Honor or abandon†). Hence, in America, children tend to move out and have their own home. In Vietnam, people don’t have such high demand for privacy. Even if they want privacy, the economic condition sometime doesn’t allow young Vietnamese to move out and live in their own house. Like it or not, some Vietnamese people are tied with their parents for live. Another reason for different attitude toward elderly between East and West is because in many collectivistic cultures like Vietnam, old people are seen as the sources of important knowledge such as culture or technology in the society. Young people, therefore, are expected to follow and learn from the older. However in America – an individualistic culture, the role of the old is not highly valued since the young are encouraged to be independent, to express their own opinions and to seek knowledge by themselves. In addition, the stereotype and prejudice on old people are quite different in American and Vietnamese culture. In the US, old people are stereotyped as chronically ill, unable to work, behind the times, slow-thinking, useless financial burdens on society (â€Å"American Attitudes†, 2010). Americans should learn from Vietnam to respect and change their view on the elderly. Old people are not the burden of the society because they do contribute a lot. In fact, elderly people in Americans own 75 percent of all American assets. Almost all older men women are still productive. Many people concentrate too much on every single affliction instead of realizing a bigger picture forms in these nations.   As the WHO reported â€Å"the prospects of the poorest billion in the Third World can be radically improved by targeting a relatively small set of diseases and conditions.† (Fogel Lee, 2002)   Many of the cures are easy to administer and should be universal for all members of the human race. Nutrition and other needs are considered to be the big killers among these populations.   The facts on Third World and Fourth World needs are staggering. The Commission on Macroeconomics and Health (CMH) of the World Health Organization estimates â€Å"87 percent of deaths among children under age five, 71 percent of deaths between ages five and twenty-nine, and 47 percent of deaths between ages thirty and sixty-nine† can be eradicated by using existing drugs and vaccines, easily delivering food, and by public-health programs that promote positive sanitation and health. (Fogel Lee, 2002) The solutions to the problems seem easy to solve when a person thinks about the big diseases instead of every single problem facing Third and Fourth World countries. Personal Development Plan Personal planning is approached by people differently based on the differences that individuals exhibit. Personal planning requires a great deal of individual effort for it to be effective. Not many people in the workplaces pay attention to developing personal plans despite being aware of their immense benefit toward personal development. In the workplace many employees feel that in developing a personal plan they are just but showing what the employer wants to see and term it as hypocritical or fail to see its value. Other employees who understand the benefits tend to take it pretty seriously. Personal develo pment plans are actually the efforts that one put in place aiming at tracking their education and performance paths. These plans assist an employee in developing their career path better. This plan includes events and benchmarks along a career path which may be long or short term depending on the goals to be achieved therein (Makinson 2001). This development plan usually encompasses learning as one works towards set goals and objectives. Personally I take a Personal Development Plan as an avenue through which am able to know myself better. A plan streamlines daily activities and compresses them within a specified timeframe. As such personal discipline is cultivated which enables one to easily surpass their initial targets on performance or even learning. PDP allows one to uncover their underlying strengths and weaknesses which in the past acted as major hindrances to efficiency and general performance at work (Rughani 2001). Personal development plans offer one a chance to evaluate performance in relation to the set targets. When this is done an individual employee is able to engage in corrective measures that include further training, acquiring of new skills while developing existing ones and acquisition of more knowledge and competence to perform various tasks at the workplace. A PDP outlines the timeframe within which achievements are to be made. As such one is able to know with certainty how far they have gone with the plan, how effective it has been and the timeframe left together with what remains pending (Cottrell 2003). This way an individual is able to analyse clearly the skills, knowledge and competences they have acquired and compare this with the set targets. One of the most important benefits of the PDP is the realisation of the skills and knowledge needed to attain unachieved objectives which in turn make an employee to develop themselves towards their attainment (Clifford & Thorpe 2007). Use of PDP is a sure way of identifying how one is learnin g and whether this process is bearing any fruits. It does that by offering evidence that is vital in analysing the required knowledge and skills in ultimately achieving particular objectives. This brings in the need for goals to follow the SMART model which stipulates that goals have to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-based (Cottrell 2003). An individual following a laid out PDP needs to constantly evaluate the viability of their goals in respect to the elements of this model as failure to do so
